Thomastik-Infeld Celebrate 50th Anniversary Of Their Revolutionary ‘Dominant’ Orchestral Strings

Vienna-based string brand Thomastik-Infeld are delighted to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of their revolutionary and world-leading ‘Dominant’ orchestral string range.

Still the most played and popular violin strings today, Thomastik-Infeld Dominant strings changed the landscape of string manufacturing forever. First introduced in 1970, they marked the first time a string manufacturer had produced strings with a synthetic core of nylon threads rather than using conventional gut and steel materials.

Dominant strings were developed and introduced following three decades of other successful string innovations from Thomastik-Infeld. The company’s proximity to and involvement with the best virtuoso performers in the world – who expressed an appetite for strings that combined the warm tonal qualities of gut strings with the stability of steel strings – saw them become the first to master the painstakingly delicate manufacturing process.

Thomastik-Infeld state, “A violin string core comprises up to 1000 individual nylon threads. Each of these threads has a diameter of 0.02 to 0.04 mm. To enable them to vibrate, not tear and give the string enough weight, they need a winding. To be able to wind the outer material onto the string core, the core must rotate. If even one of the 1000 very thin threads should break, the continuous rotation would create a knot and the string would become unusable.”

Dominant strings have become the trusted string choice for many leading violinists and string instrument players around the world. Noted for their quick response, warm tone, incredible projection, and outstanding ability to stay in tune – they offer every valuable asset required for string instruments to sound and play their very best.

“I’ve played Thomastik-Infeld Dominants for most of my life. I trust these strings as I tour all kinds of repertoire in different climates and acoustics around the world. I appreciate their tonal warmth, and I love my history with these strings.” Hilary Hahn, three-time Grammy Award-winning violinist.
