The new FUZZBOX from Solid Gold FX recreates that tone perfectly, while taking all that was great from their previous Rosie low-gain silicon circuit, plus nudging it up a gear to behave best on a modern board without losing its bite. The result is a pure vintage fury you can actually use.

The first thing you notice is how it holds together when you feed it a chord. It comes out gnarly and clear instead of collapsing into mush, and that’s a genuinely thrilling sound. Back the volume off and it cleans up in a way that still feels connected to your hands, not like someone stepped on the pedal. Lean into it and the sustain gets thick, but the notes stay defined – which is rarer than it should be on a fuzz this aggressive.
It’s not a straight retro clone though. Bias lets you move the third transistor around, so the whole thing goes from tight and snappy to soft, saggy and a bit compressed. It’s a huge part of why this thing feels so alive. Sag does the dying-battery trick, dropping the voltage from about 9 V down to 5 V. Eric Johnson used to keep a box of half-dead batteries just for this. Now it’s just a knob and, in our opinion, it sounds gorgeous.
The Vintage/Modern switch is the practical bit, and it’s the thing that makes the FUZZBOX a joy on a real board. Vintage is the raw, unfiltered Mk II response, every little pick detail right there and full of attitude. Modern smooths it out, adds some low end and, more importantly, stops the fuzz falling apart when it sees a Wah or a buffer. Which is basically every modern board, so that matters.
It all fits in a standard compact chassis with top jacks and soft-touch relay bypass, so it doesn’t fight for space. You get the old British fuzz character without the usual headaches.
