For 50 years, Seymour Duncan has helped shape modern guitar tone with pickups that offer greater power, expression and control. To celebrate this milestone, the Custom Shop has created the Duncan Distortion Limited Edition 50th Anniversary Set, a one-off run of just 500 sets worldwide!
Originally developed in response to demand for hotter, more aggressive pickups during the formative years of heavy music, the Duncan Distortion was one of Seymour Duncan’s earliest humbucker designs and became the benchmark passive metal pickup. This anniversary edition honours that legacy while remaining faithful to the original tone that helped define generations of rock and metal players.
The Duncan Distortion bridge pickup pairs a large ceramic magnet with high-output windings to deliver tight, punchy lows, cutting highs and a powerful upper-midrange presence. It drives amps harder without sacrificing clarity, producing the articulate, aggressive sound favoured by players including Randy Rhoads, George Lynch and Adam Jones. Matched with the Seymourizer II neck pickup, later renamed the Duncan Distortion Neck, the set offers fluid sustain under gain alongside clear, expressive clean tones.
While the Distortion’s core design has remained unchanged since the late 1970s, this 50th Anniversary Custom Shop version returns to several early specifications, including butyrate bobbins, long-leg baseplates and maple spacers. These vintage-correct details recreate the character of the earliest examples while preserving the classic Duncan Distortion voice.
Each set is hand-built in the Seymour Duncan Custom Shop by the specialist team led by Maricela “MJ” Juarez. Limited to 500 sets worldwide, every set features replica “Seymourized” and model-name stickers inspired by the original models sought after by collectors today. Finished with subtle ageing for vintage character, each set is supplied in exclusive 50th Anniversary packaging and is available in either black or zebra. The baseplates are hand-signed by both Seymour Duncan and MJ, making this a rare opportunity to own a genuine piece of Seymour Duncan history.
