Music Industry News is sad to report the death of Country Music legend Dolly Parton, after a short battle with cancer, she was eighty years of age.
Dolly grew up in a poor family in the rural mountains of Tennessee. Her large family – she was one of twelve children – meant that money was scarce, but she always talked of a childhood filled with love, and music.
Dolly began writing songs as a child, and early recognition came from her skills as a songwriter. She first appeared at the sacred home of Country Music, The Grand Ole Opry, at the age of thirteen, where she was encouraged to follow her music by Country star Johnny Cash.
Travelling to Nashville in search of a career as a Country artist, Dolly signed as a singer with Monument Records at the age of nineteen. Monument saw her as a bubble-gum pop singer, but her success as a writer of hit Country songs persuaded them to let her try out as a Country artist.
Dolly’s major break came when she joined Country star Porter Waggoner on his syndicated television and stage shows. The couple enjoyed continuous chart success as a duo, and were named Vocal Group Of The Year in 1968 by The Country Music Association. Dolly finally achieved success as a solo artist, particularly with her best-known song Jolene, released in 1973. Parton confirmed that the song was inspired by a red-haired bank teller at their local bank, where Parton’s husband of sixty years, Carl Dean, had an account, and the teller apparently, a crush on the Country star’s husband.
Dolly’s split with Porter Waggoner was enshrined forever in her song I Will Always Love You, the version by Whitney Houston in the film The Bodyguard was a massive worldwide hit, and earned Dolly Parton millions of dollars. Elvis Presley expressed an interest in recording the song, but Dolly refused the standard fifty-fifty royalty split demanded by Elvis’s manager Colonel Tom Parker.
In the mid-seventies, Parton made a conscious decision to broaden her appeal to reach a wider pop-oriented audience. Her song Here You Come Again was her first million-selling single, reaching Number One in the Country Charts, but also, more importantly, reaching Number Twenty in the Pop Charts.
Expanding her artistic career as a film actress, Dolly Paron appeared in the highly successful Nine To Five, and her theme tune composition was a hit in the Country, Pop, and Adult-Contemporary Charts. She consolidated her appeal as a Country/Pop crossover success when she recorded Islands In The Stream with fellow Country star Kenny Rogers, the song was written by The Bee Gees, and produced by Barry Gibb.
By the mid-1980’s Dolly Parton moved her main focus back to her first love, Country Music, recording the album Trio with her great friends and fellow superstars Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt. She ventured further into the root of Country, recording a Bluegrass interpretation of Led Zeppelin’s Stairway to Heaven for her Halos and Horns album in 2002.
Always an eclectic and adventurous musical artist, in 2023, Dolly Parton, released a Rock album, called, unsurprisingly, Rock Star, when she collaborated with music legends including Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Relton John, Stevie Micks, Sheryl Crow, and Steve Perry. It’s the measure of the respect and esteem in which Dolly Paron is held by musicians all over the world, that such a stellar list of stars contributed to the album, which topped both the Country and Rock album charts. As recently as last year, she was continuing to make inroads into rock music, recording a version of Home Sweet Home with metal titans Motley Crue for a compilation album whose proceeds went to a charity supporting homeless young people.
Throughout her life, Dolly Parton never forgot her beginnings in poverty, and she donated millions of dollars through a variety of charitable links and causes. Her most well-known, The Dollywood Foundation, has raised millions of dollars for under-privileged young people around the world. Throughout her life, Dolly Parton was an outspoken advocate for the protection of animals, and an icon and fervent supporter for the Gay and Trans communities.
Underneath her famously ‘trashy’ exterior, which she simultaneously embraced and parodied with a ready wit and self-deprecating humour, Dolly Parton was under-recognised for her talents as a musician. She was highly proficient on acoustic guitar and banjo, bringing her Appalachian playing techniques to a wider audience.
Following her passing, it’s a measure of the massive popularity that Dolly Parton enjoyed, that President Trump requested the lowering of Stars And Stripes flags to half-mast across the U.S., and the musicians of the Buckingham Palace Guards in London played Nine To Five, as a tribute.
Dolly Parton will be remembered as a hugely influential song-writer and musician, and also as a philanthropist and supporter of the causes she believed in. The world of music is a sadder place for her absence.
