Finalists announced for 2023 Yamaha Music Europe Foundation UK Scholarship

As one of the world’s largest manufacturers of musical instruments, Yamaha believes passionately in musical education. Now in its 33rd year, the Yamaha Music Europe Foundation (YMEF) Scholarship will see cash grants totalling around €66,000 made to a total of 44 music students from 31 countries, for use in the advancement of their studies.

With percussion as this year’s discipline, a high level of applicants for the UK YMEF Scholarship were submitted and the shortlist of finalists were determined by a ‘blind audition’ by Janet Barkus of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM).

Yamaha are delighted to announce the finalists for the 22/23 UK YMEF Scholarships are:

  • Sharon Fung – Vibraphone/Marimba
  • Isaac Harari – Marimba/Drums
  • Sophie Stevenson – Marimba/Drums/Stepladder
  • Zilong Jiang – Marimba/Snare
  • Elliot Gaston-Ross – Marimba/Snare/Glockenspiel
  • Massimo Martone – Snare/Marimba
  • Matthew Brett – Drums/Marimba/Vibraphone

The seven finalists will compete on February 17th to win one of the three €2000 scholarships available.

The final will be held at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester in front of a distinguished judging panel comprising of Calum Huggan (Professorial Staff – Percussion) of Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music & Dance, Toby Kearney (Head of Percussion) of The Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and Simone Rebello (Director of Percussion) of Royal Northern College of Music. It is sure to be a day full of memorable performances, the event is open to the public and admission is free.
