Peavey’s revolutionary RBN arrives in UK

Peavey’s ambitious new RBN Series Ribbon Driver speaker enclosures have arrived in the UK, says distributor Barnes & Mullins.

The RBN Series represents something quite different from the usual ‘speaker in a box’ PA enclosure, using proprietary 120mm true ribbon drivers which promise an HF sound quality unobtainable with the typical compression drives found in comparable PA enclosures.

The series consists of 1×10” and 1×12” active full range enclosures with 2×15” and 1×18” sub options. The top enclosures feature dual voice coil neodymium Scorpion speakers and a raft of built in user-friendly features including digital compression/limiting, nine-band EQ, bass enhancement and internal presets allowing users to quickly select the speaker’s application or orientation via an LCD screen.

The RBN subwoofers feature two XLR/1/4″ combination inputs, a 3.5mm input, and a mic/line level selection. Each input features digital infrasonic high-pass filters, a nine-band graphic EQ and delay. The speaker outputs feature a sophisticated compressor/limiter and fourth order highpass/low-pass filter for crossover output. Peavey says that reliable performance is guaranteed through the inclusion of internal temperature monitors combined with a variable speed cooling fan, plus level and clip indication.

The key to the RBN series, however, lies in the ribbon devices used for high frequency duties. Peavey has protected its high-performance ribbon technology with solid ultra-braced moulded encased enclosures with multiple fly points and heavily braced 18mm birch plywood subs on casters, making them a good choice for installations or portable applications where audio quality, reliability and efficiency are key, the company says.

Previously, ribbon technology has been restricted to very high end microphones and transducers used in studio and broadcast applications, as ribbons were regarded as too fragile for more robust uapplications. Peavey, no doubt making use of advanced material technology, is convinced it has overcome any such reliability issues.

Peavey’s RBN Series speakers are available to order now through UK distributors Barnes and Mullins. Info: www.bandm.co.uk
